Story Ending Generator

Generates a type of story ending — bittersweet, twist, open, circular and more — as a target to write toward, whatever the story is.

What this generator does

Draws a *type* of ending rather than an ending — bittersweet, circular, twist, open — because knowing the shape you are writing towards changes what you plant in the middle. A circular ending needs its opening image set up in chapter one, and you cannot retrofit that easily.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 15 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • A bittersweet ending: the goal is achieved, but at a real cost
  • A circular ending that returns to the story's opening image, changed
  • A triumphant ending where every thread resolves cleanly
  • A cliffhanger ending that sets up a clear next chapter
  • A hopeful ending that doesn't resolve everything, but points forward
  • A full-circle ending where a side character becomes the story's quiet hero

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 15, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random.. Last reviewed 2026-07-19.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a story-ending type.

Common use cases

  • Deciding how to end a story in progress
  • Writing exercises focused on structure
  • Breaking through writer's block near the end

Practical tips

  • Choose the type before the last third, not after. Almost every ending type requires something planted earlier, which is the actual reason endings feel unearned.

Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
