Battlefield Feature Generator

Generates a random terrain feature for a tabletop RPG battlefield — adding tactical variety to a combat encounter beyond a flat, featureless map.

What this generator does

Draws a terrain feature to make a combat encounter tactical. An empty room is a damage-trading exercise; one with cover, height or something breakable gives positioning a point, which is where most of the interest in a tabletop fight actually lives.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Difficult terrain (mud, rubble, dense undergrowth) covering half the field
  • A collapsing structure that could be brought down on combatants
  • Low visibility from fog, smoke or dust
  • Scattered cover from broken walls, crates or fallen trees
  • A hazard zone (fire, unstable ice, quicksand) that damages anyone who lingers
  • Slippery or unstable footing across part of the field

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random.. Last reviewed 2026-07-19.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a battlefield feature.

Common use cases

  • Adding tactical variety to combat encounters
  • Game-master prep for battle maps
  • Quick session-filler content

Practical tips

  • One feature both sides can use beats three that only complicate. The enemy taking the high ground first is what makes the players want it.

Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
