Character Fear Generator
Generates a character fear — the thing they're afraid of becoming or losing — pairing with the character-goal generator to build a fuller motivation.
What this generator does
Draws what a character is afraid of — the counterweight to a goal. A fear is only useful in a story if the plot can force the character into it, so these are situations and losses rather than phobias: being found out is usable in almost any scene, whereas a fear of spiders needs a spider.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Being forgotten entirely
- Becoming exactly like a parent they resent
- Losing the one relationship that matters most
- Being ordinary, despite everything
- Failing the people who depend on them
- Being trapped somewhere they can't leave
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated character-fear list. Last reviewed 2026-07-25.

- Build a character or scene around it.

Practical tips
- The most useful fears are the ones that make the character's own goal dangerous to pursue. If the fear can be avoided by walking away from the plot, it is decoration.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
