Character Goal Generator
Generates a character goal — what they want, beneath the surface of the plot — pairing with the character-fear generator to build a fuller motivation.
What this generator does
Draws what a character is actively trying to get. A goal is the thing that makes a character move through a plot rather than be moved by it, and it has to be concrete enough to succeed or fail at — 'be happy' is a state, not a goal, and a character pursuing one has nothing to do in a scene.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- To be believed, after years of being dismissed
- To return home, whatever that now means
- To undo a mistake before anyone finds out
- To prove a rumour about them wrong
- To find where they truly belong
- To be free of an old obligation
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated character-motivation list. Last reviewed 2026-07-25.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a goal.
- Build a character or scene around it.
Common use cases
- Character development exercises
- Overcoming a character-planning block
- Creative writing workshops
Practical tips
- Pair the goal with a fear from the fear generator and check they conflict. A character who wants something that costs them the thing they are most afraid of losing is a story; one whose goal and fear are unrelated is a to-do list.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
