Conflict Generator

Generates a central story conflict — a tension between two needs, loyalties or truths — for building a scene or full plot around, distinct from a plot-twist reveal.

What this generator does

Supplies the tension a scene needs — what two characters want that cannot both happen. That is what drives a scene, and its absence is why a well-written scene can still feel flat.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Two people who need the same thing, but only one can have it
  • A promise made that turns out to be impossible to keep
  • A community must choose between two bad options
  • A secret that, once revealed, changes everything
  • Two loyalties that can no longer both be honoured
  • A stranger arrives who knows more than they should

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated narrative-conflict list. Last reviewed 2026-07-25.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a conflict.
  2. Build a scene or story around it.

Common use cases

  • Overcoming a plot-planning block
  • Screenwriting or novel-planning exercises
  • Writing workshop prompts

Practical tips

  • Give both sides a reasonable case. A conflict where one party is simply wrong resolves itself and stops being a conflict.
  • Check the scene changes something. Conflict that returns everyone to where they started is an argument, not a scene.

Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
