Cut and Match Worksheet Generator

The promise a cutting sheet makes is that the pieces go back together: all of the card, none of it twice. Most generators take that on trust because they drew the cuts and therefore think they know it, which is exactly the assumption a stray cut breaks. Here it is settled from the finished pieces. Each piece is checked to be a straight-sided shape sitting inside the card, no two are allowed to overlap anywhere, and their areas are added up against the area of the whole card — and pieces that are inside it, do not overlap, and account for all of its area can only cover it exactly.

What this generator does

Puts a picture on a card and cuts the card with straight lines that run all the way across, always cutting the biggest piece next so the set does not drift into one large piece and a handful of scraps. Each piece is then drawn on its own with the part of the picture that falls inside it, and the pieces are shuffled so they are not laid out in the order they go back in.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose how many pieces, whether the cuts run along the card or at an angle, and how much detail the picture carries.
  2. Print the sheet, cut out the pieces and put the picture back together.
  3. Keep the finished card beside you to work from, or hide it to make it harder.
  4. Copy the link if a class or a group needs the same puzzle.

Understanding the controls

Pieces
Two to eight. No piece is ever less than a twentieth of the card, so nothing comes out as a sliver too thin to cut.
Cuts
Along the card, which makes every piece a rectangle, or at an angle, which makes corners and wedges. Angled cuts are harder to place because a piece no longer tells you which way up it goes from its edges alone.
Detail
How much of the picture is drawn. This changes the shape itself — more contours and more corners — rather than the weight of the line.
Repeat word
The word this puzzle was built from. Anyone opening the same link gets the same picture cut the same way.

How this generator works

Because every cut runs the whole way across, every piece is a shape with no dent in it, and two such shapes fail to overlap exactly when one of their own edges separates them — a test that is exact and settles the question either way, rather than sampling for a collision. Two pieces meeting along a cut touch and overlap by nothing, which is what that test confirms. The slack on the area sum is set from the size of the numbers rather than picked, and a test measures how much room is left between an honest sum and the slack allowed.

Randomness and fairness

The picture, the cuts and the order the pieces are laid out in all come from a repeat word taken from your browser’s secure generator unless you type one of your own, so one link gives a group the same puzzle. A repeat word makes a puzzle reproducible and is not a security measure; nothing here is suitable for anything that has to stay secret.

Limitations and good to know

  • Every cut is a straight line all the way across, so the pieces have no tabs or notches and will not hold together the way a shop jigsaw does.
  • Pieces are shown the right way up. Turning them over as well would make the puzzle harder and is not something this does.
  • The picture on the card is a line drawing built from geometry rather than taken from a library, so it is recognisable rather than realistic and nothing on it is traced from anybody else’s work.
  • A piece cut from a plain part of the picture carries no line at all, and where it goes has to be worked out from its shape.
  • Printing at a smaller size makes the thinnest pieces harder to cut than the sheet suggests on screen.

Privacy and your data

The picture, the cuts and the check on them all happen in your browser, and nothing about the puzzle is sent anywhere or kept. The repeat word is a short label this page minted or you typed, and it is the only part of the puzzle that appears in the address.
