Shadow Match Worksheet Generator
The usual way one of these sheets is made is to draw a picture, draw some shadows, and hope only one of them fits. That hope fails in the direction that matters — two shadows near enough that a child choosing the wrong one was not wrong. Here both halves of “exactly one” are settled before the sheet appears. The right shadow is the picture’s own outline turned round, so it fits exactly; the wrong ones differ in a way that turning a shape cannot account for, so they cannot fit at all.
What this generator does
Draws a picture and a row of filled outlines beside it. One of those outlines is the picture’s own, turned about its centre so it is not sitting the same way up; the others belong to different pictures. Only the outline casts a shadow, so the lines inside the picture do not appear in it — which is the thing the activity is really teaching.
How to use this tool

- Print the sheet and ring the one shadow that belongs to each picture.
- Show the answers to mark it.

Understanding the controls
- Pictures
- Two to six on a sheet. No picture appears twice while a different one is still unused.
- Shadows for each
- Three to five. More shadows is a longer look rather than a harder one, because every wrong shadow is ruled out by the same margin however many there are.
- Detail
- How much of each picture is drawn. This changes the shape itself — more contours and more corners — rather than the weight of the line.
- Repeat word
- The word this sheet was built from. Anyone opening the same link gets the same pictures and the same shadows in the same order.

How this generator works
Turning and moving a shape leaves two things exactly as they were: how long its outline is, and how much area it encloses. So a shadow differing from the picture in either of those by more than a set margin cannot be that picture turned round — that is a proof rather than an impression, and it is how every wrong shadow here is excluded. The right one is checked the other way: the turn is worked out from the finished shadow and every point confirmed to land back where it started.
Randomness and fairness
The pictures, the turns and the order of the shadows all come from a repeat word taken from your browser’s secure generator unless you type one of your own, so one link gives a group the same sheet. A repeat word makes a sheet reproducible and is not a security measure; nothing here is suitable for anything that has to stay secret.

Limitations and good to know
- The pictures are line drawings built from geometry. They are recognisable rather than realistic, and nothing here is traced from anybody else’s artwork.
- A shadow is the outer edge only. A picture whose interest is all in its inside detail makes a duller shadow than one with a distinctive edge.
- Shadows are turned but never flipped over, so the answer never depends on telling a shape from its mirror image.
- A real shadow stretches and skews with the light. Nothing here is stretched, because a stretched outline is a different size and the question is whether the shadow belongs to the picture.
- The answer letters live under the sheet on this same page, so a screen everybody can see shows them the moment they are revealed.
Privacy and your data
The pictures, the shadows and the answers are all worked out in your browser and nothing about the sheet is sent anywhere or kept. The repeat word is a short label this page minted or you typed, and it is the only part of the sheet that appears in the address.
