Emotion Generator
Generates a random specific emotion word — more evocative than a generic 'happy' or 'sad' — for building a character's inner state or a scene's mood.
What this generator does
Draws a precise emotion word rather than a broad one. The point is granularity: 'sad' covers grief, disappointment, homesickness and resignation, and those look completely different on the page. A specific word narrows what the character does with their hands, which is where emotion actually gets written.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 16 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Wistful
- Overwhelmed
- Numb
- Hopeful
- Tender
- Suspicious
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 16, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated list of specific, evocative emotion words for character work. Last reviewed 2026-08-17.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for an emotion.
- Write a character or scene around it, or generate again for another one.
Common use cases
- Character-building exercises
- Setting a scene's mood
- Acting/drama warm-ups
Practical tips
- Use the word to decide the behaviour and then delete the word. Naming the emotion in the prose is almost always weaker than showing the specific thing that only that emotion produces.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
