Homophone Challenge Generator

Picks a commonly confused homophone pair — their/there/they're, its/it's — for practising correct usage in a sentence.

What this generator does

Draws a homophone set to distinguish — words that sound identical and mean different things. These are worth drilling separately from spelling generally, because no amount of sounding out will ever resolve them and a spellchecker will not either.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • their / there / they're — use each correctly in a sentence
  • your / you're — use each correctly in a sentence
  • its / it's — use each correctly in a sentence
  • whose / who's — use each correctly in a sentence
  • where / wear / we're — use each correctly in a sentence
  • brake / break — use each correctly in a sentence

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random — common English homophone pairs.. Last reviewed 2026-07-18.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a pair.
  2. Use each correctly in a sentence.

Common use cases

  • Spelling and grammar practice
  • Literacy classroom activities
  • Common-mistake correction drills

Randomness and fairness

Sets are drawn uniformly with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with no grading by frequency or difficulty.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.

Practical tips

  • Ask for a sentence using each, not a definition. The sentence is what shows whether they can actually place it.
  • Homophone errors survive proofreading because they are real words. Reading aloud does not catch them either.
