Random Industry Generator

Generates a random industry sector — from healthcare to renewable energy — useful for business-plan brainstorming, teaching examples, or roleplay scenarios. Draws from a 48-entry list built to span the whole economy, not just the sectors people find interesting to write about.

What this generator does

Picks an industry sector, for business exercises, market-research practice and generating varied scenarios for teaching.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 48 entries. Here is a spread of 8 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Healthcare
  • Financial services
  • Real estate
  • Aerospace
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Marine and shipping
  • Sports and recreation
  • Printing and signage

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 48, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated list of industry sectors. Last reviewed 2026-09-03.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for an industry.
  2. Generate again for another one.

Worked examples

The list's range
Covers everything from "Cybersecurity" and "Aerospace" to "Waste and recycling" and "Care homes and social care" — deliberately including the unglamorous sectors most idea lists skip.

Common use cases

  • Business-plan brainstorming
  • Teaching examples for business classes
  • Roleplay or simulation scenarios

How this generator works

A sector is drawn from a curated list assembled to span the whole economy rather than the parts that are interesting to write about — so agriculture, waste management and logistics appear alongside the technology and media sectors that dominate most such lists. The breadth is deliberate: a list drawn from the sectors people find exciting is useless for the exercise of thinking about an unfamiliar one.

Randomness and fairness

A seed word switches to a deterministic, non-cryptographic draw, so a sector already assigned in a teaching scenario can be found again by that word rather than re-noted.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.

Limitations and good to know

  • A broad sector list rather than a formal classification. It does not follow SIC, NAICS or any other official coding scheme.
