What this generator does

Draws a deliberately placed trap, which unlike a hazard has a designer — and therefore an intention, a trigger somebody chose and a reason it is where it is. Working out who built it and what they were protecting is usually more interesting than the damage roll.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 24 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

• A bell hung where any opened door will ring it, with something listening
• A statue that releases a dart when its gaze is met
• A treasure pile that's actually bait for a larger trap
• A room that counts a party in and seals when the last of them enters
• A trap armed by the act of disarming the decoy sitting beside it
• A trapped-looking door that is genuinely safe, placed to teach the wrong lesson

Limitations and good to know

• 24 concepts in total. "Don't repeat what I've already seen" is on by default, so a session works through all 24 before any repeat.
• The concept is the idea only; the trigger DC, damage and detection difficulty for your system are left for you to set.

Practical tips

• Traps that kill outright end sessions; traps that separate the party, make noise or cost a resource create them. Prefer the second kind unless the fiction demands otherwise.
