Trap Concept Generator

Generates a random deliberately-placed trap concept for a tabletop RPG dungeon — distinct from a natural environmental hazard.

What this generator does

Draws a deliberately placed trap, which unlike a hazard has a designer — and therefore an intention, a trigger somebody chose and a reason it is where it is. Working out who built it and what they were protecting is usually more interesting than the damage roll.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • A pressure plate hidden beneath a deliberately obvious false trigger
  • A trapped chest that appears already opened
  • A lever that must NOT be pulled, disguised as the obvious solution
  • A false floor tile that swaps places with a real one
  • A rune that activates only when read aloud
  • A treasure pile that's actually bait for a larger trap

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random.. Last reviewed 2026-07-19.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a trap concept.

Common use cases

  • Dungeon-design prep for game masters
  • Adding tactical challenge beyond combat
  • Quick session-filler content

Practical tips

  • Traps that kill outright end sessions; traps that separate the party, make noise or cost a resource create them. Prefer the second kind unless the fiction demands otherwise.

Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
