Travel Complication Generator
Generates a random complication for a party travelling between locations — weather, terrain and logistics problems, distinct from the structural/indoor dungeon-feature generator.
What this generator does
Supplies something to go wrong on a journey, which is what stops travel becoming a line on a map. Smaller in scope than the encounter generator — a complication is a problem, not necessarily a fight.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- A washed-out bridge forces a long detour.
- A sudden storm rolls in with no shelter nearby.
- A toll collector demands payment the party can't easily afford.
- Wildlife has been spooked — something bigger scared it off.
- A fellow traveller asks to join, but seems to be hiding something.
- The only inn for miles is already full.
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated tabletop-RPG travel-encounter complications. Last reviewed 2026-08-17.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a complication.
- Drop it into your session, or generate again for another one.
Common use cases
- Overland travel encounters
- Game-master improvisation
- Pacing a long journey session
Practical tips
- Use one that costs the party a resource rather than time; a delay is rarely interesting on its own.
- Let the complication be solvable in more than one way, or it is an obstacle rather than a decision.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
