UK City Generator
Generates a random major UK city — for geography trivia, a weekend-away idea, or classroom use.
What this generator does
Draws a UK city at random. 'City' in the UK is a formal status granted by the Crown rather than a matter of size, which is why St Davids has a population of under two thousand and is a city, while several much larger towns are not. The list follows that formal status.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 20 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- London
- Edinburgh
- Bristol
- Newcastle
- York
- Bath
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 20, without repeating until the list runs out. Major cities of the United Kingdom (public/factual list). Last reviewed 2026-08-17.
How to use this tool

- Generate again for another one.
Common use cases
- UK geography trivia
- Weekend-trip inspiration
- Classroom geography activities
Randomness and fairness
Uniform across the list using the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with no weighting by population — the smallest city is as likely as London.
For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.
Limitations and good to know
- City status in the UK is granted, not earned by size, so the list will not match an intuition based on how large a place feels.
- New cities are created periodically, most recently for jubilees, so any list ages.
- The draw gives a name only — no region, population or description.
