What this generator does
Draws a UK county at random. Counties are a genuinely awkward category — historic, ceremonial and administrative boundaries all differ, and have differed several times in living memory — so the list uses the ceremonial counties, which is the set most people mean and the one most quizzes use.

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 20 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

Randomness and fairness
Every county on the list is equally likely, drawn with the browser's cryptographic random number generator. There is no weighting by population or area, so Rutland is exactly as likely as Yorkshire.

Limitations and good to know
- County boundaries are contested and have changed repeatedly. Any single list will disagree with somebody's, including with the postal county on their address.
- It gives a name and nothing else — no population, no county town, no map.
- Historic counties, ceremonial counties and unitary authorities are three different systems, and this uses one of them.
