What this generator does

Draws a UK county at random. Counties are a genuinely awkward category — historic, ceremonial and administrative boundaries all differ, and have differed several times in living memory — so the list uses names in everyday use rather than one official set. Most are historic counties: Yorkshire and Sussex are each several ceremonial counties today, and Cumbria dates only from 1974. Twenty of the 26 are English; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have two each.

Understanding the controls

Seed: A repeated seed brings back the same county unless the generator has changed since, so a quiz host can set the same question for several rounds or teams. It's deterministic, not cryptographic.

Randomness and fairness

Every county on the list is equally likely, drawn with the browser's cryptographic random number generator. There is no weighting by population or area, so Anglesey is exactly as likely as Yorkshire.

Limitations and good to know

County boundaries are contested and have changed repeatedly. Any single list will disagree with somebody's, including with the postal county on their address.
It gives a name and nothing else — no population, no county town, no map.
Historic counties, ceremonial counties and unitary authorities are three different systems, and this list is not any one of them: it is 26 names people use, out of well over a hundred counties across the four nations.
